Ellsworth continues construction on Global Strike Command, South Dakota’s first 3D-printed building

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. -- The 28th Civil Engineer Squadron recently advanced construction on the Unit Control Center (UCC), at Camp Lancer on Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., adding structural building support while a Denver-based construction company provided the 3D concrete printer to create the facility’s exterior walls.

The UCC is the first 3D-printed building in Air Force Global Strike Command and South Dakota.

“Being the first base within our MAJCOM to have something like this shows Ellsworth’s innovation in utilizing new technologies to achieve operational effectiveness,” said an Airman from the 28th CES. “The building will help facilitate exercises, enhancing our troops’ readiness and expeditionary skills as they support the long-range strike mission.”

The U.S. Air Force Academy Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering assisted in the design of the UCC by providing structural and architectural expertise to the 28th CES.

The UCC’s design was selected as part of a larger proof-of-concept initiative to test the operational effectiveness of 3D-printed structures in deployed and contingency environments.

“Facilities such as this demonstrate our Airmen’s ability to utilize sophisticated technology and available resources to accomplish military operations while downrange,” said an Airman from the 28th CES. “Having this kind of equipment allows us to find new ways to innovate and complete challenging tasks.”

In conjunction with this project, the Camp Lancer Construction Corps was established to provide on-site training for engineer Airmen, offering hands-on construction experience and opportunities to develop cross-career-field knowledge among personnel from different flights within the 28th CES.

“Airmen who were responsible for laying the foundation or who will provide the electrical framework for the facility will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in each other’s career fields,” said an Airman from the 28th CES. “This is great for Ellsworth’s mission, as it will allow our Airmen to support a number of operations and strengthen the multi-capable Airman concept.”

Construction is slated to be completed in early 2027.
