Construction Notice: South Road Over Ballard Brook Bridge
Dear Residents:
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of improvements that are scheduled to be made on South Road Bridge. I hope you find this information helpful in answering questions you may have as you see these improvements take place.
This project will be funded entirely through the MassDOT Small Bridge Grant Program. The work to be done will consist of replacing the superstructure, beams 1-8, bridge decking, rail bases and rails, with repairs to the concrete wing walls and other parts of the structure.
The first phase of this work is scheduled to begin on August 17, 2026, weather permitting, and last through November 30, 2026. The second phase of this project will resume on March 16, 2027, and wrap up on May 24, 2027. Generally, work will be performed during the normal times of 7am to 4pm, however these times may vary, as the work requires. This project will require a large amount of truck traffic and cause some minor delays. One lane will remain open to traffic throughout the entire project and unfortunately through the winter of 2026-2027.
I hope this is only a minor inconvenience to you and ask for your patience and cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the above, please feel free to contact me at any time at 413-566-8842 or highway@hampdenma.gov.
Sincerely,
Mark F. Langone
Highway Superintendent
